Bagatelle (2013)                                            single-channel video, stereo

Bagatelle was composed as a one-minute silent animation for participation in the Museum of Modern Art (NY) Abstract Currents in April of 2013.

The abstract expressionist motif of Bagatelle is derived from a closeup of a locomotive wheel in the opening sequence of Walter Ruttman's Berlin: Symphony of a Great City (1927). Ruttman was an animator (Opus 1) as well as filmmaker. The opening frames of Berlin are an animation of shapes derived from images (motifs) of crossing gates, water, buildings, etc. that appear immediately and throughout his film. In Bagatelle, the locomotive motif develops in a style consonant with the abstract optical film animation of Ruttman's time.
