Those who say religion has nothing to do with politics do not know what religion is.
--– Mahatma Gandhi
American political discourse has always been closely intertwined with religious reference and rhetoric. The voice in Signs and Wonders is that of Calvin Coolidge delivering a speech on the principles of democracy. His dogmatic language --They who sin are the servants of sin --They who break the laws are the slaves of their own kind --To obey is life. To disobey is death--is the language of absolute certainty, destiny, exceptionalism, an attitude always present in American religion and politics.
